Is "Yesterday I goed to the market" correct?
Ankit writes "Yesterday I goed to the market", thinking the past tense is always made by adding "-ed". His sister says it does not work that way here. Who is right?
Who do you think is right? Pick one.
The answer: His sister is right, the correct word is "went"
Why
Ankit has learned the single most common past-tense rule in English — add "-ed" — and it genuinely works for most verbs: walk becomes walked, play becomes played. "Go" belongs to a large family of irregular verbs, though, which change their form completely rather than simply adding "-ed": go becomes went, eat becomes ate, see becomes saw. There is no spelling rule that predicts "went" from "go" the way "-ed" is predictable — it has to be learned as its own word, the same way "children" has to be learned as its own plural. Test: try saying "goed" out loud in a full sentence and notice how unfamiliar it sounds compared to "went" — that discomfort comes from having heard "went" used correctly hundreds of times, which is exactly how irregular verbs get learned, one at a time. His sister is right: "went" is the correct past tense of "go", one of many English verbs that don't follow the regular "-ed" pattern at all.
