Vishal says humans use only 10% of their brain, and if the remaining 90% could be "woken up" too, people would become far more intelligent. His sister says this is wrong. Who is right?
Who do you think is right? Pick one.
The answer: His sister is right, humans use nearly all of the brain
Why
Vishal's claim is one of the most widely repeated 'facts' about the brain, which is exactly why it feels true — repetition, not evidence, is what has kept it alive. Brain-scanning studies looking at people doing all kinds of tasks — thinking, moving, resting, even sleeping — show activity spread across virtually the entire brain, not just a small fraction lighting up while the rest stays dark. There is also a strong reason this could never make evolutionary sense: the brain uses about 20% of the body's total energy despite being only about 2% of its weight — an organ that expensive to run would never have evolved to leave 90% of itself unused. Test it: think about brain injuries — damage to almost any area of the brain causes some kind of noticeable problem (movement, speech, memory, vision), which would be strange if 90% of the brain were doing nothing important in the first place. His sister is right: humans use nearly the whole brain, not just 10% of it — a claim repeated everywhere is not the same as a claim that has actually been tested and confirmed.
