Why

Aditya has seen compasses used to find the way somewhere and reasonably assumed that's the whole trick — point it, and it aims you home. What the needle actually does is much narrower and much more useful: it is a tiny magnet that always turns to line up with the Earth's own magnetism, so it always settles pointing towards north (roughly), wherever you stand and whichever way you're facing. It doesn't know where any particular house is; it only ever knows one fixed direction. Finding your way with a compass means YOU work out the route using that fixed north as a reference, the same way you'd use a signboard that always says 'this way is north' and let you figure out the rest from a map. Test: walk in a circle holding the compass — the needle keeps pointing the same way the whole time, not swinging to follow you home. His sister is right: the needle always points north, and turning that into directions to a place is a job for the person holding it, not the compass.
