Vivek says Mahatma Gandhi won the Nobel Peace Prize
Vivek says Mahatma Gandhi won the Nobel Peace Prize. His sister says Gandhi was nominated several times but never actually received it. Who is right?
Who do you think is right? Pick one.
The answer: His sister is right, Gandhi was nominated but never awarded it
Why
Vivek's belief is a very common one, and it fits what feels right: Gandhi is one of the most admired figures in the history of non-violent struggle, so people assume the most famous peace prize must have gone to him. It did not. Gandhi was nominated five times — in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947 and finally in 1948, days before he was assassinated. In 1948 the Nobel Committee gave no Peace Prize at all that year, stating there was 'no suitable living candidate'. Decades later a secretary of the Committee publicly called the omission the greatest in its history. Test: this is easy to check on the Nobel Prize organisation's own website, which lists every laureate and has an article calling Gandhi 'the missing laureate'. His sister is right: Gandhi was nominated repeatedly but never awarded the Nobel Peace Prize — being the obvious deserving choice and actually receiving an award are not the same thing.
