After the results one party has the most seats but fewer than half
After the results one party has the most seats but fewer than half. Manish says its leader automatically becomes Prime Minister, because the most seats means the government is yours. Ishaan says not necessarily. Who is right?
Who do you think is right? Pick one.
The answer: Ishaan is right
Why
Manish has the usual picture, you came first so you govern, and often the largest party does form the government. But the rule is not 'most seats', it is 'commands the confidence of more than half the Lok Sabha'. A party with the most seats but short of half can still be kept out if other parties together have the numbers and agree to back someone else. The President invites whoever seems able to command a majority, and that person then has to prove it by a vote on the floor of the House. Test: look up a year in India when the single largest party did not end up forming the government. Ishaan is right: government goes to whoever can hold a majority in the House, and being the biggest single party does not by itself guarantee that.
